How long to climb mt batur

We got to our hike a little late starting at 6 am and missing the sunrise on the summit of the trek. We had a local tour guide with his own adorable 11 year old side kick who carried bottled water and coca cola for sale on his back. You will have to pay a fee for the guide and may have to negotiate a bit, but it is rumored to be difficult to climb the volcano without being bothered by guides if you do not get one. It is practically impossible to climb Mt. Batur without a licensed guide. This is not only a tourist attraction and a way you can help support the locals who run and control tour guides up Mt.

Batur but also for your safety. Tourists have been killed and seriously injured by falling, mudslides, and even rocks and gas that are spit out by vents. Use that knowledge to help you negotiate.

If you are solo traveling, it may be best to try to join others to help split the cost up. Batur for sunrise! Doing the Mt Batur Volcano Hike without a guide is no longer easy. Locals will tell you its too hard, and some may even try to tell you the wrong directions on purpose. The trail is primarily used for hiking and nature trips. It was amazing. We were totally alone because if the Covid. I would not do this hike together with hundreds other people, but since we were alone, it was just amazing.

I wore runners, Capri leggings and a tank top and I wish I would've pack a sweater for the top because I was hot during the climb and freezing at the top! A steep and fairly challenging hike.

We started at around so it was dark out. There wasn't much to see on the way up other than what our headlamps lit up a few metres ahead of us. We ended up reaching the summit as the sun was rising and the views were amazing! It was fun hanging out with the monkeys that were up there too. Although the hike is fairly short, you're gaining elevation the entire time. There are a lot of loose volcanic rocks so watch where you step. I recommend wearing hiking boots.

I would definitely do this hike again! It was my first hike and I loved it. Very technical hike- and as mentioned since everyone starts at am it can be hard to scramble up. Non-"athletic" people can make it just fine maybe start earlier to make sunrise. Breathtaking views and you can see the smoke from the volcano on top. On the way down- you may bump into some monkey friends. Amazing hike! Pretty challenging.

Very rocky sandy terrain being a volcano. Sunrise was amazing so was the views. Worth the 3am start. Monkeys and dogs at the top. Explore on the way down.

Up up up!!!! The hard work is worth seeing the sun rise at the top!!! Definitely a highlight of my trip when I travelled there in 19! Highly recommend. Great hiking experience! Was tough at times considering I also have asthma but was well worth it for the beautiful view.

Would recommend to anyone visiting Bali, unforgettable! Steep hike in rocky trail. Every single step is worth the sunrise at the top of the volcano. Crowded, but friendly people from all over the world. Guides are fantastic, energetic and will motivate you to finish the hike. Amazing views in the clouds! Bucket list trip! Get your camera ready for the monkey pictures!

I found this hike to be pretty challenging but worth it. Took us about 2,5 hours to climb it. Difficult hike at times but wasn't unbearable. We hiked on one of the busiest days of the year so there was quite a lot of cramped walking up and down.

Amazing sunrise view! Something to tick off the bucket list. Challenging but rewarding hike to the summit. Started around 3am and completed in under 2 hours for the sunrise.

It was very cold while dark. Very crowded at the peak but worth it for the beautiful views. Walking down was slippery and the heat set in, bring plenty of water! Would recommend to all fitness levels, with plenty of stopping opportunities along the way. Completed this hike after no training and being out of shape, and it was very challenging.

The first is flat and steady incline, but once you get to the volcano, you can take the dirt bike path, which is easier.

Or you can take the straight up path. We did this one. Towards the top is more incline plus volcanic sand. Always communicate with your guide about the best day to go up if you are flexible in your schedule. This question is quite subjective as it all depends on your fitness level and experience in hiking. It was interesting for us to do the Mount Batur sunrise hike in and to compare. Also because we did a different and shorter route in Overall I think the Mount Batur hike is a moderate hike and doable for everyone with little to no hiking experience.

Of course the way up you are hiking in the dark, so you will have to hike with your full attention and need a headlamp or flashlight.

And yes, it can be steep at some points and yes your heart rate will go up. But the view is so rewarding! There are some technical parts with loose stones and sand which can be slippery but no huge drop offs. Just stay focussed on your steps and you will be fine. Locals even do this hike on flipflops, not recommended of course…. In total you will hike around 2 hours, so you will need at least 1 liter of water.

So you will also need a light jacket. Wear shoes that are comfortable for you to hike in. Take some band-aids with you in case of blisters or other small wounds. A headlamp or camera flashlight is needed in the first hours. The paths are uneven so at some points you have to climb a bit. Different lenses are also recommended. We hiked the Mount Batur volcano two times, in and However in we had a completely different experience as we only went up with another couple and were in Bali when the island was still closed for tourists.

So we were only with a handful of other people on the crater of Mount Batur. Very special and happy we could experience the sunrise on Mount Batur in such silence without many other people! If you have a telephoto lens then this gives amazing opportunities to create some compressed images of the trees and fog. In I shot this image below with my lens. Of course you can stay as long as you want on the crater of Mount Batur, but at some point you will have to make your way down.

Most likely you will go another way down as you came up while walking along the crater ridge. Be careful here and be prepared to have your shoes full of sand!

Hotel pickup and transfer is included in most Mount Batur hiking packages — including the tour we went on, organised by TripGuru. If you have a scooter, in theory you could also ride to the base of Mount Batur yourself and trek to the summit independently. However, we would very much advise against doing so — riding through Bali in the middle of the night on a scooter might be dangerous, as the roads are dark and full of obstacles not to mention, lots of dogs! Planning a Mount Batur sunrise hike is super easy.

Dozens of companies operate Mount Batur day trips, starting with a 1. We opted for this hike with TripGuru , because we liked the idea of hiking with a small group.

TripGuru put us in touch with our driver via WhatsApp, and we arranged a time and place for our early morning pick-up. It is not necessary to book months in advance for your Mount Batur trek as departures are frequent, but if you want to book a small-group tour like we did, we recommend doing so at least one week before your chosen date. In theory, yes. You could simply drive yourself to the base of Mount Batur and start hiking.

However, we very much recommend trekking Mount Batur with a guide , for two reasons. Firstly, this is how many locals living in the vicinity of Mount Batur support themselves. Do yourself a favour and enjoy trekking Mount Batur with a local guide! There we met our local guide Putu, who gave us with flashlights and a bottle of water each, before starting the trek. At the start, the trail climbed gradually, we were all able to keep a steady pace, since we were climbing in darkness and there was nothing to see.

We all agreed on the hard path. We hiked through a forest for a further half-hour, as the trail grew increasingly steeper. Nyoman, a young lady from a nearby village joined us, with a backpack full of soft drinks and snacks available for sale. After we left the forest, the path became very rocky, and sometimes we needed to use our hands to scramble up, and it was necessary to pay attention to the uneven terrain.

We hiked a few more switchbacks up, on a flat, even path, until we reached the top.
